As a human geographer, I am fascinated by people’s relationship to cities. My research focuses on the racialized ways American cities attempt to revitalize after deindustrialization. How do cities like Milwaukee, Wisconsin revitalize after decades of deindustrialization, white flight, and segregation? I explore how city officials and boosters justify their economic development plans through seemingly colorblind language while maintaining racial hierarchies through segregation and poverty. At the same time, I examine how Black low-wage workers fight back against the dominant, colorblind language that codes them as uneducated, untrainable, lazy, and undeserving of development.
